THE SHAPE OF THINGS
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
“It’s all subjective, Adam. Everything.” - Evelyn
“Not love. Not cruelty.” - Adam
“Of course they are...” - Evelyn
In the myth of original sin, the moment Eve chooses to bite into the forbidden fruit, humanity’s innocence is sacrificed to desire forever. As a director, I am fascinated by questions of morality, and objective notions of right and wrong. In The Shape of Things, we meet Adam and Evelyn, modern reflections of the characters in original myth. Is Adam an innocent, corrupted by the force of Evelyn’s will? Or is he complicit, desiring a taste of the forbidden fruit just as much as she? It is easy for us to observe the choices these characters make, to judge them as innocent or guilty, and possibly condemn them in our minds. Instead, we must question everything, or we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of myth. Is love real? Is art? Is morality? Is anything?
